EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Elizabeth Channel began serving as interim assistant superintendent of operations on Jan. 5, taking charge of budget, transportation, nutrition & facilities after Josh Viegut resigned. Wausau Daily Herald
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Hikers visiting Rib Mountain State Park should note that ash trees on the Yellow Trail are being removed due to emerald ash borer concerns — only 13 miles of trails remain open. Crews plan to finish work by Thursday, Jan. 8. WSAW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Social Security and SSI recipients will see a 2.8% increase in January checks with payments scheduled on Jan. 14, 21, or 28 based on birthdays, while SSI payments adjust for the New Year holiday shift. Wausau Daily Herald
- ➤ At least 18 states will impose SNAP food restrictions on items like candy and soda in 2026, but Wisconsin has not approved similar changes for its FoodShare program. FoodShare already limits purchases for over 689,000 residents, including 270,000 children. Wausau Daily Herald
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ YMCA wellness director Renee Giese of the Woodson YMCA in Wausau said accountability and realistic fitness goals are key to New Year resolutions. The center offers special membership deals (including discounted personal training) through Jan. 10 to help locals stay active. WSAW
- ➤ The Marathon County Health Department reported a 68.2% compliance rate from alcohol checks last year aimed at preventing sales to underage testers—efforts seek to reduce underage drinking. Law enforcement partnered for checks at bars, restaurants, and stores across the county. Wausau Daily Herald
- ➤ The American Red Cross has announced five blood drives in Marathon County to help fight a winter shortage at locations like Holiday Inn in Rothschild and Woodson YMCA in Wausau. Donors are urged to book appointments and donate by Jan. 25 to enter a Super Bowl LX giveaway. Wausau Daily Herald
- ➤ Cruise for a Cause donated $175,750 to support Marshfield Clinic’s cancer research, helping patients in Marshfield, Weston, Minocqua & Eau Claire. The fundraiser, which began in 2010, will hold its annual golf outing on Sept. 14 at Greenwood Hills Country Club in Wausau. Wausau Daily Herald
- ➤ The CDC has revised its routine vaccine schedule for children by now recommending vaccines for flu, COVID-19, meningococcal, RSV, hepatitis A and B, and rotavirus only for high-risk groups; Wisconsin officials are reviewing the changes and advise parents to consult pediatricians while school requirements remain unchanged.
