- ➤ The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is hosting a free fishing weekend on Saturday and Sunday at local ponds, rivers, and lakes. Anglers are reminded to check ice conditions and use available gear clinics (in Marathon, Lincoln, and Wood counties) while following all fishing rules. WSAW
- ➤ The Wausau MLK Celebration will be held today from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Marathon Park Eastgate Hall (801 Garfield Ave) and features ethnic foods, speakers, dancers and music to honor Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy; registration is required for this free event. WSAW
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Weber’s Farm Store in Marshfield is preparing to add whole milk and 2% milk for over 50 schools as part of the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act. The store will work with school districts when USDA finalizes program details (which may adjust milk fat requirements). WSAW
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Center for the Visual Arts opens its winter exhibition season with four shows featuring regional talent, including the 36th Annual Midwest Seasons Exhibition with an opening reception (5 to 7 p.m.) today. The exhibits run through March 14 at 427 N. Fourth St. Wausau Daily Herald

- ➤ Students at Stettin Elementary School raised $7,034 during their winter Read-a-Thon, beating the $5,000 goal to fund PTO events and supplies. Top fundraisers even got to pie Principal Kyle Sackett — a fun twist before the holiday break. Wausau Daily Herald
- ➤ Students at D.C. Everest Idea School presented independent research projects on Thursday evening during Product Palooza, showcasing a project-based learning approach with one-on-one advisor support. School officials held an enrollment meeting and scheduled info sessions on Feb. 2 and Feb. 17 (for interested families). WSAW
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Aspirus Health advises individuals managing substance use that recovery is a process where setbacks are normal. Expert Tanya Hoy recommends setting realistic goals (Dry January is a popular start) and seeking support if old patterns reappear. WAOW
- ➤ Eleven Wisconsin residents became sick from salmonella linked to Live It Up-brand Super Greens powder; the FDA advises discarding any product with expiration dates between Aug. 2026 and Jan. 2028 as two have been hospitalized and the powder is sold primarily online. Wausau Daily Herald
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Voting for the Packers Fan Hall of Fame is open online until 11:59 p.m. Jan. 31; fans can read profiles and vote for one of 10 finalists including Wausau’s own Dean Schmitz. The winner will be announced in late February and receive exclusive game and fan experiences. WSAW
- ➤ Local high school teams won key conference games on Thursday with Auburndale girls beating Wildcats 47-19 at Edgar, Marathon holding off Newman 44-42 in Wausau, and Tigerton boys defeating Northland Lutheran 67-35 in Kronenwetter. They now prepare for upcoming games against Newman, Stanley-Boyd and Rosholt. WSAW
- ➤ Former Olympic curler Tom Violette mentors his son Luc as he prepares for the Winter Olympics and competes in state championships at Stevens Point. The 65-year-old (bronze medalist and national champion) will travel to Milan in February to support his son while coaching locally. WSAW
