ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Wisconsin DNR responded to a manure spill in Black Creek near Athens late Thursday after a failed manure transfer at DeerCreek Holsteins, and officials remain unsure of the spill amount as they work with Marathon County Department of Conservation, Planning and Zoning to monitor the situation.  WSAW
  • On Jan. 16 at 8:05 p.m., an unknown amount of manure spilled from a livestock site on Creekview Road in Athens when a transfer system failed. DNR staff and county conservation officials worked to monitor the spill as Deercreek Holsteins LLC began cleaning up.  Wausau Daily Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The IRS announced that tax returns for 2026 will be accepted on Monday, Jan. 26 while residents are urged to begin gathering tax documents (employers must send W-2 forms by Monday, Feb. 2 and returns are due on Wednesday, April 15).  Wausau Daily Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • The 'Through a New Lens' mental health resource event runs today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Central Wisconsin Convention & Expo Center. More than two dozen organizations will offer support through law enforcement exhibits & family activities including face painting, a petting zoo, go-kart simulator & bingo.  WSAW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Friday high school hockey and basketball games took place amid snow in Marathon County. The Central Wisconsin Storm lost 2 to 1 in overtime while D.C. Everest swept its doubleheader (winning 60 to 30 and 93 to 66), and Assumption boys and Mosinee girls earned close wins.  WSAW
  • Packers fans can vote for late Lorraine Mueller, a dedicated fan known for hosting game day parties, who was nominated posthumously for the Packers Fan Hall of Fame; a memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 24 at Zion Lutheran Church in Tigerton (attendees should bring a dish for the potluck).  WSAW
