CULTURE NEWS

  • Sean Wright, executive director of the Grand Theater, was named to the APAP board today to boost local and national performing arts. With 11+ years at the theater, he will support new initiatives that strengthen performances and community ties.  Wausau Daily Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Caroline S. Mark Boys and Girls Club opens at 6:45 a.m. today for kids in grades 3 to 12, offering activities like games, cooking, arts and crafts, sports, and meals at 1710 N. 2nd Street. Families can register online or in person for $20 per year, with scholarships available.  WSAW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources warns residents to avoid rock salt this week since it is ineffective below 15 degrees and recommends using sand or kitty litter for traction on icy roads and sidewalks; they advise cleaning up these materials after the cold spell.  WSAW
  • Rib Mountain’s water utility advises residents to call when they see the road lifting with water pouring out amid subzero conditions. Crews use acoustic tools (hydrant correlators) to locate breaks and work to prevent water loss.  WSAW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Aspirus Health is urging early ADHD evaluations for children ages 6 to 12 to help boost success at school and home; parent and teacher questionnaires guide options like medication + counseling.  WSAW

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Thursday night, Rib Lake boys basketball recorded a 75-55 win over Newman (8-2) while Marathon girls won 82-41 against Abbotsford and D.C. Everest hockey rallied in overtime to beat Marshfield; Rib Lake will play Flambeau on Friday and Marathon faces Edgar on Monday.  WSAW
  • The Wausau 525 Snowmobile Championship is coming this weekend; volunteers worked Thursday to prep the track for safety amid cold weather — honoring late racer Flip Merwin. Gates open at 9 a.m. Saturday with opening ceremonies at noon, and race drivers will decide on any schedule changes.  WSAW
