COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of Marathon County will launch its third annual Lottsa Pasta drive on Feb. 6 — locals can donate pasta and rice at Festival Foods, the Express Market in Weston or the United Way office. The drive runs through Mar. 17 and volunteers will sort donations afterward.  WAOW
  • Central Wisconsin Ice and city officials are reviewing city-owned parcels to study new ice rink options that can support rising interest in hockey and skating. The exploratory committee will gather input from local school districts and county representatives (local stakeholders) as it plans future facility improvements.  Wausau Daily Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from Lincoln County schools competed in the annual Conservation Poster Contest hosted by the Lincoln County Conservation Program today + Tomahawk Elementary’s Grades K-1 winners Logan Fishbeck, Finley Koppa, and Logan Winter advanced to the Area Contest.  WSAW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • SafeWise’s Jan. 29 report ranked Kronenwetter as the fourth safest city in the state, up from eighth and with improved crime rates — Police Chief Terry McHugh credited these gains to strong community leadership.  Wausau Daily Herald
  • Wausau Fire Chief Jeremy Kopp testified in Madison on Wednesday on a bill to expand the Community Care Paramedic Program, emphasizing that a successful program needs a proven plan, community partners, and full resource support to lower unnecessary 911 calls.  WSAW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Local high school athletes signed their college commitment letters on Wednesday during the final NCAA signing day, with students from Mosinee, Lakeland, Marshfield, Wausau East, Amherst and Rhinelander schools choosing teams including the University of Wisconsin and Northern Michigan. Their signings marked a key step in their athletic futures.  WAOW
