COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Wausau PD hosted its Polar Plunge at Thom Field on Thursday morning, where participants jumped into a mobile plunge unit (borrowed from Minnesota) and raised over $23,000 for the Special Olympics.  WSAW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wausau School District students Aeryn and Elise Wetzsteon raised $11,100 to equip Deaf and Hard of Hearing students with SafeAwake bed shaker devices + a Feb. 17 celebration at Riverview Elementary demonstrated the devices for 26 students.  WAOW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Village of Weston will host its second community open house on Feb. 26 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Greenheck Turney Community Center Meeting Room #3, 6400 Alderson St. to collect feedback on its draft bicycle and pedestrian plan for investments over the next 10-20 years.  WSAW

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Assembly passed Gail’s Law by unanimous vote to require insurance companies to cover extra breast cancer screenings for women with dense breasts — the bill now heads to Gov. Tony Evers, who said he will sign it.  Wausau Daily Herald
  • Wisconsin lawmakers passed a bipartisan Medicaid expansion bill that extends postpartum coverage for new mothers to a full year and a breast cancer screening measure; Governor Tony Evers is expected to sign both bills next week, leaving only Arkansas without the expanded coverage.  WAOW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cooper DePuydt (Wausau West), Jonah Dickens (Tomahawk), and Grant Molski (SPAS) are finalists for the WHCA Player of the Year Award after a record season, and the winner will be announced on Thursday, March 5 at the Marriott Hotel in Middleton.  WAOW
  • SPASH hockey won 7-3 against Chippewa Falls on Thursday to advance to the D1 sectional semifinals and will meet Wausau West on Tuesday. The boys and girls basketball teams swept a doubleheader against Wisconsin Rapids—boys will face Hudson on Saturday for a Valley title share.  WSAW
