COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Catholic Charities will return to a six-month service model at the Good Shepherd Shelter on May 1 after two years of year-round service. Representatives said the change follows a review of a request for proposals that showed their available space and funding could not support a year-round shelter.  WSAW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Great Dane will close its Wausau location after 15 years due to rising food costs and changing consumer habits. The business will contact clients with event reservations—issuing full refunds—before its final day on April 19.  WAOW

CRIME NEWS

  • Former D.C. Everest dance coach Alexandria Villiard pleaded guilty to misdemeanor theft after an audit found a $12,000 deficit in team funds caused by using her personal Venmo account, and she paid restitution by her March 11 court date along with a $100 fine and court costs (she resigned from her position).  WSAW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tianna Poulos was named Youth of the Year at the Boys and Girls Club after reaching the statewide final four and speaking with state legislators as part of a local tour before her term ends in January. The club will open its Caroline S. Mark Site at 6:45 a.m. during spring break for programs and field trips for children from second grade through high school at a $20 annual membership fee with a 5:30 p.m. pickup time.  WSAW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Marathon County Board considered a proposal on Thursday evening to approve $940,000 — funded by $540,000 from general reserves, $290,000 from timber sale revenue in 2024, and $110,000 from timber sale revenue in 2025 — to repair Marathon Park’s ice rink that had freezing issues last fall and threatened the coming season.  WSAW

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Wisconsin men's basketball team beat Montana 85-66 on Thursday and advanced to the Round of 32 for the first time since 2022. They will face either BYU or VCU on Saturday—deciding their next matchup.  WSAW
  • Wausau East held an assembly to send off its boys basketball team as they prepare for their first state game today at the Kohl Center after 18 years away. The team and local fans support the seniors as they aim to win their first state title.  WAOW
