COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A benefit account was set up at Covantage Credit Union on March 27 for the Punke family after their home was damaged by a fire on County Highway O in Stettin. Crews said the fire began on the second floor and the family's 18-year-old dog is recovering from smoke inhalation while the cause remains under investigation.  WSAW

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • In 2023, distracted driving was involved in about 9,000 Wisconsin crashes that led to 23 deaths and around 4,000 injuries—experts advise locking away phones or having a passenger handle devices to reduce these risks.  WSAW

CRIME NEWS

  • Kallie Gajewski, a Medford woman accused of driving drunk and fleeing a police officer on an 18-mile chase, was given a $20,000 bond in Marathon County—she faces charges including her fifth operating while intoxicated, failing to install an ignition interlock device and driving with a revoked license with a trial decision set for April 9.  WSAW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Susan Crawford won Tuesday’s election over Brad Schimel and will replace retiring justice Ann Walsh Bradley—this change keeps the Wisconsin Supreme Court under liberal control with a 4–3 split.  Wausau Daily Herald
  • Officials in Kronenwetter extended polling hours until 9 p.m. by court order yesterday after switching to paper poll books at 10 a.m. when technical issues and long wait times caused some voters to leave. Marathon County and village clerks said polling places in other parts of the county will still close at 8 p.m.  WSAW
  • Wausau-area voters rejected the school district operational funding referendum on Tuesday by a narrow margin of 10,051 no votes to 9,701 yes votes. Ballots also counted votes for the Wisconsin Supreme Court, state superintendent of public instruction and a statewide referendum on requiring photographic identification for voting—each with varied margins reflecting a competitive contest.  Wausau Daily Herald
