Good morning, Wausau. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 5th of April.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ On Friday, The Neighbors’ Place stocked shelves with donated hygiene supplies to help people in need as part of the 33rd Help for the Homeless Hygiene Drive that gathered items from more than 130 state agencies across 22 communities. Organizers say the drive aims to give local agencies a year of needed products since SNAP benefits do not cover hygiene items—an effort to boost daily support. WSAW
- ➤ Seven major events are taking place across Wisconsin this weekend — a free vintage game night hosted by the Marathon County Historical Society at Woodson History Center on Friday from 5:30 to 8:30 and a wine and cheese event for the Boys and Girls Club of Portage County starting at 7:30 p.m. Other events include today's glow-in-the-dark Easter Egg hunt at Trinity Merrill Lutheran Church in Merrill, a Dinosaur Adventure at Marathon County Park in Wausau, a tribute concert at Adams Friendship Fine Arts Center at 7 p.m., a Cardboard Cup competition at Granite Peak at noon, and a free film festival in Manitowoc with doors opening at 5:30 p.m.—all offering a range of choices statewide. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A fungal disease called Neopestalotiopsis, known as Neo-P, is causing significant strawberry crop loss in several states and may lead to a shortage of healthy plants for growers; an Ohio farm canceled its 2025 crop and a Loveland market canceled its festival. Wisconsin's DATCP is not greatly concerned about the disease spreading here—growers and home gardeners are advised to buy plants from trusted nurseries and check for any signs of illness. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Mosinee High School’s resource closet called Motique now gives students free access to hygiene products, clothing, snacks, and school supplies. The FCCLA-managed space was transformed from a storage room into an organized resource (with racks and new furniture) that empowers students to get what they need without stigma. WSAW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, the Wisconsin DNR and County Deer Advisory Councils are asking for public input on deer management for the 2025 season via an online survey open through April 13 (feedback will guide harvest quotas and management zones). Residents can also attend local county meetings from April 21 to May 1 (meeting locations are available) to share their views. WSAW
- ➤ A recount is scheduled for today after a close vote in the Lac du Flambeau town chair race, with Thompson trailing incumbent Gaulke by seven votes. A tribal member already won a board seat with 693 votes amid a long-running dispute over four roads used by non-tribal members on the reservation—an issue that has drawn attention from state and national officials. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Marathon County Health Department said that more youth, including high and middle school students and even some as young as third grade, are using oral nicotine pouches that come in bright colors and appealing flavors — a tactic aimed at drawing in new, lifelong customers. The health educator noted that these pouches are available in various nicotine strengths at low cost from local gas stations and are easy to hide, which might boost addiction risks. WSAW
