COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Inside Wausau's tallest building, a 13-foot tower built entirely with toiletries from a recent hygiene drive stands in the Dudley Tower—Miron Construction partnered with local businesses on the $6,300 collection—and will be taken down on April 28 so the supplies can be donated to schools and organizations.  WAOW

CRIME NEWS

  • Rian Nyblom, one of two teens charged after a youth counselor died following an assault at Lincoln Hills, may reach a plea deal with his hearing set for April 24—he faces charges of felony murder and battery by prisoner.  WSAW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wausau Police Department will open a temporary homeless shelter in the basement of First United Methodist Church on May 1 after a single proposal did not meet the city’s need when Good Shepherd Shelter closes for summer. The city and Marathon County will each pay about $65,000 and hire two temporary employees with ARPA interest funds to run the shelter until year’s end—ensuring emergency housing is available during the summer months.  Wausau Daily Herald
  • Next Wednesday, the public will learn about planned improvements to Schofield Avenue from Normandy Street to Birch Street in Weston, including repaving, pedestrian signals at Pine, Cherry, and Fox Streets, water valve and sewer upgrades, and new storm inlets designed to reduce flooding — the meeting is at 6 p.m. at the Weston Municipal Center.  WSAW

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Marathon County Health Department educator said youth vaping in northcentral stays steady despite local and state efforts as tobacco companies market vape pens with bright designs—making the habit seem normal. The Health Department is accepting old vape pens at its Wausau office this month to help reduce nicotine exposure.  WSAW
  • In March, Marathon County Health Department inspections at several local food establishments found serious violations including raw beef patties stored at the wrong temperature at Wendy's No. 53 and mold on chest freezers at BB Jacks—other businesses also faced issues with food handling, sanitation, and proper cleaning. Some establishments corrected certain violations during inspections while repeated problems persisted at others.  Wausau Daily Herald
