- ➤ Local power and emergency crews urge residents to get ready for thunderstorm season by following safety measures such as staying 25 feet from downed power lines & seeking lower shelter during a tornado. WPS and EMS are on alert for severe weather and fast responses to emergencies. WAOW
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Grand Theater in Wausau announced it will speed up its $17 million remodeling project with Miron Construction+ the work will now finish in seven months, allowing it to open in summer with new seats, fresh paint, carpet, a renewed ticket office and ADA improvements. WAOW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Grand Theater hosted a free event Monday at 6 p.m. on teen driving safety, where local firefighters, police, and trauma doctors explained how to avoid distracted driving. Families also heard firsthand how wrong-way driving can have devastating consequences (a Mosinee family shared their personal loss). WSAW
- ➤ Students with Native roots can wear tribal regalia at graduation after Governor Tony Evers signed Act 222 on April 9; the law stops school boards and charter schools from blocking traditional attire at school events (protecting members, descendants, and those eligible for enrollment). WAOW
- ➤ Today, Wausau School District received $631,407 in library aid as part of the Common School Fund (record $73.5M statewide distribution) with a check presented at Wausau West High School during Public School Library Month. Wausau Daily Herald
- ➤ Northcentral Technical College offers free construction skills training through a WRTP BIG STEP partnership to help ease the local worker shortage in Wausau. Eight students gain hands-on experience and OSHA 30 training that prepares them for apprenticeships and future employment. WSAW
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Monday night, the 9 News Storm Track team reported a tornado near Gilman, quarter-sized hail, and heavy rain that caused flash flooding in low-lying areas including parts of Wausau; residents should exercise caution and avoid flooded roads as additional warnings continue. WAOW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Conservation Congress hold annual fish and wildlife hearings this evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. across counties—Wausau's session is at the School Forest ELC Center. WAOW
- ➤ The Wausau Police Department said a tornado siren at 72nd Avenue and Stettin Drive failed testing on Monday and officials are working to repair it before severe weather affects the area. WSAW
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Wausau West senior Maci Heise enters her final track season today; she has earned several Wisconsin Valley Conference accolades and aims to repeat as state champion in the 300-meter hurdle while uplifting teammates in relay, hurdles, and long jump events. WSAW
- ➤ Clumber Spaniel fans will gather for a nine-day national championship event hosted by the Clumber Spaniel Club of America starting April 25. Competitions will take place at Country Paws near Stevens Point and at the Expo Center in Rothschild — concluding with tests at Belle Fountain Kennels on May 2-3. Wausau Daily Herald
