  • Central Wisconsin humane societies are preparing for kitten season by restocking supplies like specially formulated kitten food—after taking in 115 young cats last year—to manage the expected influx from May through September. They urge community members to spay and neuter their pets and to call the shelters before bringing in stray kittens.  WSAW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • At the Wausau Chamber’s annual Business Expo on Thursday, In The Lite was named the 2025 Small Business of the Year and Habitat for Humanity was named the 2025 Non-Profit of the Year. More than 300 businesses and groups took part in the expo—organizers said it is the largest event of its kind in the state.  WAOW

CRIME NEWS

  • Tribal police on the Lac du Flambeau Reservation have searched 824 acres using drones and search dogs for Melissa Beson, 37, who was last seen on March 17 near Indian Village Road and Chequamegon Forest Trail in Vilas County after her family reported her missing on March 23 amid concerns over missing Indigenous people.  Wausau Daily Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • River and Woods Theatre Company is performing 9 to 5 today in Wausau, a Broadway musical based on the famous 1980s movie starring Dolly Parton. The production has evolved with eight weeks of rehearsals adding music and dance, and tickets cost $20 for adults and $15 for kids and seniors – the show runs today and again Saturday at 7 p.m.  WSAW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local schools gathered at The Grand Theater to hear firsthand accounts from Holocaust survivors as Nancy Kennedy Barnett shared videos of her late father and Eva Zaret recounted her early life in Hungary. Both survivors answered student questions and spoke against hatred while promoting kindness.  WAOW

  • On Thursday evening, the Marathon softball team beat Edgar 10-2 in light rain to split the series after a 2-0 loss on Tuesday. The Marathon baseball team rallied from an early deficit to win 5-3, evening the series and avenging an earlier defeat.  WSAW
