COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ A crane was seen lifting parts of a partially constructed home in downtown Wausau today as The Hagar House expands its facility to provide six safe parking spots and help two more families. TKC Construction and Wausau Homes are working on the project using funds from The Hagar House capital campaign, with most work expected to finish by the end of this week or early next week—supporting community safety efforts. - ➤ On Monday, The Hagar House in Wausau added a new building next to its facility that provides secure parking and two apartments above six parking stalls for single mothers—this project cost $1,000,000, was built in one day by Wausau Homes with community donations, and supports mothers as they work toward greater independence. ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Marathon County officials reported that James Michael Kemp, a 48-year-old man from Iola, died in a single vehicle crash Saturday morning just after 9:00 on County Road N in the Town of Norrie—Birnamwood Fire, EMS and the Medical Examiner’s Office also responded. WAOW

- ➤ Monday night, the Parks and Recreation Committee approved a lease for Sweets and Slices to open a snack and ice cream shop at Riverlife Park, replacing Briq’s. CMA Wausau LLC said the shop (which will sell ice cream, shakes and pizza) will begin hiring soon and is set to open by June 1. WSAW
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A large bull elk (known as #244) was illegally shot on private property north of Black River Falls on March 18, and the DNR is asking locals to call with tips to help identify the suspect as the animal was key to the elk reintroduction program. Wausau Daily Herald
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ After being inspired by art seen on the west coast, Wausau West Senior Sadie Peissig proposed her idea to the Central Wisconsin Airport board and high school art teachers, leading to the debut of her 'Art in Flight' exhibition on display at the airport. The show includes eight pieces (four from Wausau West and four from Wausau East students) that will be featured for one year with a new rotation next year, and Peissig secured a four-year deal with plans for a new student to take over after her graduation. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported a drop in underage tobacco and vape sales last year with rates falling from 13.6% in 2023 to 11.8% in 2024. Most sales occurred at tobacco and vape shops — where the rate was 30% — compared to lower rates at gas stations and other retailers. WSAW
