COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ After a tornado damaged homes, cars and an elementary school in Ringle Friday, Mt. Olive Lutheran Church organized volunteer cleanup efforts today and later this week. Volunteers meet at the church at 7:30 a.m. for training — they will help remove debris in Ringle, Kronenwetter and Weston. WSAW
- ➤ Ringle Fire Department is hosting a fundraising raffle and dinner on Saturday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Trailside Bar and Grill in Schofield (free food, soda, and beer will be offered along with raffle baskets and a gun raffle to help buy new equipment). WSAW
- ➤ CASA Marathon County held an event today featuring former foster child and NFL player Gaelin Elmore, who urged more volunteers to support local kids in need by sharing his story of community help. CASA is hosting the annual Blueprint of Hope benefit tomorrow at the Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art. WAOW
- ➤ Cycling Without Age Marathon County is recruiting volunteers to pilot free trishaw rides in Wausau + training is scheduled for May 1 and May 29 from 5 to 9 p.m., with rides starting in early June through Labor Day. Wausau Daily Herald
- ➤ Prevail Bank’s hygiene drive collected $3,150 in personal care items at seven branches (including Wausau) early today to support local crisis agencies through the 88.5FM drive. Wausau Daily Herald
- ➤ Wildwood Zoo announced that beloved mountain lion Star passed away; she was 17 and would have turned 18 in June. The zoo has cared for her since 2008 and said her absence will be deeply felt by local animal lovers. WSAW
- ➤ North Central Wisconsin Riders will honor fallen law enforcement officers by riding in two multi-day events: an 11-day, 1,300-mile tour from San Francisco and a 300-mile ride starting in Philadelphia finishing in Washington D.C. on May 12 + two Wisconsin officers will be added to the national memorial. - ➤ Wisconsin Public Service is asking Wausau residents to vote to name peregrine falcon chicks after local news anchors. The chicks will hatch at the Weston power plant and voters can cast their votes until May 5 (multiple votes allowed). WSAW
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ New data show Wisconsin residents spent $36.1 million on marijuana taxes to Illinois & nearly $6 million to Michigan last year by buying at border dispensaries. Lawmakers will use the report to focus debates on medical and recreational legalization as changes may come after the November election. WSAW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Marathon County Public Library will host free children’s storytimes in May as it prepares for its Summer Library Program. The Wausau branch will offer sessions on Wednesdays (May 6, 13, 20, and 27) from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., while Athens and Mosinee have similar events scheduled. Wausau Daily Herald
- ➤ After last week’s storm damaged its facility, Riverside Elementary moved classes to the Greenheck Turner Community Center today. The district will use the space for two weeks while experts assess the repairs. WAOW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Attorney General Josh Kaul visited Wausau to promote drug take back day events aimed at safely disposing of prescription drugs. Over 260 agencies will host sites this weekend, and local police operate a prescription drop box during normal business hours. WAOW
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ State health officials are reviewing Wisconsin’s methadone rules that limit take-home doses (set at 13) and force daily clinic visits, which providers say hinder access for patients, including those in Wausau.
