COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Veterans from the Greenheck Group helped clean roads last weekend by removing trash along a 2-mile stretch on County Highway U near Witter's Dairy west of Wausau. The event, part of a series of community efforts, allowed the group to share service stories and support local pride. WAOW
- ➤ Following last week’s tornado, United Way of Marathon County helped survivors in Ringle by connecting 12 to 15 with housing and offering help via its free 211 line. CEO Ben Lee said recovery takes time (an event occurring in 30 seconds) and support will last for at least a year. WSAW
- ➤ Bridge Street Mission opened a permanent shelter today after over a year of planning and months of construction to house 60 guests in separate sections for men and women. Leaders from Bridge Street, the City and Marathon County celebrated the ribbon cutting and plan to fast track permanent housing for guests. WAOW
- ➤ Wausau Mayor Doug Diny will lead a 2.5-mile Bike to Work ride on May 12 at 7:15 a.m. from Marathon Junction in Marathon Park to City Hall, where refreshments will be served after the ride. Wausau Daily Herald

- ➤ NorthStar Restoration Services and Bridge Street Mission were named 2026 Small Business of the Year winners by the Greater Wausau Chamber of Commerce. The awards were presented on April 16 at the Central Wisconsin Convention + Expo Center in Rothschild. Wausau Daily Herald
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) released a guide yesterday that explains which common materials can be recycled at home and which items need special drop-offs. It also outlines proper disposal for hazardous items like light bulbs and batteries. Wausau Daily Herald
- ➤ The DNR warned that very high fire danger spans most of the state because warm, windy conditions increase wildfire risk and urged residents to avoid outdoor burning and off-road equipment use until rainfall eases the threat—911 should be called immediately if a fire ignites. WSAW
- ➤ The Midwest Renewable Energy Association introduced its Grow Solar program for residents in Portage, Marathon, Waupaca, Waushara, Wood and Lincoln Counties to secure bulk discounts on solar installations, while local farm advocates warn that large wind projects may affect farms and wildlife. An open conference is set for Sunday, April 26 at Stratford Heritage Barn. WAOW

- ➤ In Kronenwetter, officials say the utility pumped nearly 1.2 million gallons of water after last week’s storm — more than triple the daily average — while crews kept basements clear so far; with more rain expected tonight, residents are asked to stay cautious. WAOW

- ➤ Red Cross blood drives are scheduled across central Wisconsin, including one in Wausau on April 30 from 1 to 6 p.m. Donations earn a $15 e-gift card until April 30 and a $20 Amazon gift card until May 17 (donors must bring proper ID). Wausau Daily Herald
