COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Communities in central Wisconsin began cleaning up after an EF-0 tornado hit Birnamwood for two minutes and another touched down in Mattoon for 10 minutes at 80 mph on Monday night, damaging a farm and several buildings — neighbors are now working together to fix the damage.  WSAW
  • Wausau residents are invited to test their knowledge of local landmarks by taking a photo scavenger hunt quiz + the challenge asks them to identify five locations from the photos and share their results.  Wausau Daily Herald
  • Today, multiple organizations in Wausau are hosting a free presentation at the Grand Theater to raise awareness of sextortion and help parents learn how to protect children—featuring speakers Brittney Bird and John DeMay, with a resource fair at 5:30 p.m. and a program from 6 p.m. to about 8 p.m.  WSAW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wisconsin joined 18 other states in a lawsuit filed April 25 in a Massachusetts court to challenge a U.S. Department of Education directive that would cut federal funding—over $840 million at risk—if DEI programs are ended; state officials say the move violates civil rights law while federal leaders defend it as necessary to prevent discrimination.  Wausau Daily Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Wausau Ethics Board postponed today's hearing on a complaint against Mayor Doug Diny due to the lack of key participation and to allow additional witness interviews—City Attorney Anne Jacobson noted up to five more could be interviewed. Board member Brian Mason announced he will step down when his term ends today.  WAOW
  • The Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee held a budget listening session Tuesday in Wausau—local groups from Central and Northern Wisconsin provided feedback on the two-year spending plan. City leaders including Mayor Doug Diny and legislators Pat Snyder, Cory Tomczyk, Brent Jacobson, and Jessie James spoke before the committee said work on the budget will continue in May with a goal to finish it this summer—guiding future budget plans.  WAOW
  • The Wausau Ethics Board voted 4 to 1 to delay its next ballot dropbox meeting by 120 days so that more witnesses can be heard before a final decision is made (one board member recommended dismissing the complaints).  WSAW

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday, D.C. Everest softball beat Wausau West 6-2 and the Wolfpack lacrosse team defeated Kimberly 17-4. The wins boosted D.C. Everest’s unbeaten record in Valley play—while the Wolfpack now stand at 5-1.  WSAW
  • Local baseball players Nate Langbehn and Keagen Jirschele will join the Woodchucks for the 2025 season beginning May 29 at Athletic Park—Langbehn is a Wichita State freshman from Rothschild who broke his high school's ERA record, and Jirschele is a South Dakota State freshman from Mosinee who earned Division 2 State Player of the Year honors.  WSAW
