CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Stratford woman Jessica Colby pleaded guilty on January 31 and was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison with 3 years of supervised release for her role in trafficking methamphetamine and cocaine in Marathon County — a search of her home uncovered drugs, rifles, and cash. WSAW
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Friends of Wausau Historic Landmarks will launch their season with a bike ride on May 3 at 1:00 pm to honor Pat Peckham by touring historic sites along the Southeast side—participants will meet at Airport Sports Park and should prepare with helmets, proper clothing, and a bike in good order. Special event T-shirts will be available for $17 before the ride and free donations are welcomed. Wausau Times

- ➤ The Community Foundation’s Youth Philanthropy Leadership Program—a dream of retired Sue Nelson that began in 2023—teaches local high school students how nonprofits work and how to raise funds; Mosinee High School senior Jena Bartnik, who raised over $2,000 at a pickleball tournament at the Wausau Tennis Club, will study philanthropic leadership at Indiana University Indianapolis this fall. - ➤ The commission approved buying two new Ford Explorers and updating its paratransit fleet with two vans and one cutaway using CARES Act funds from an April 17 meeting + they also set up a new summer school route with two morning trips to serve East High and appointed Carol as vice chair. - ➤ The Wausau-Marathon County Shelter opened May 1 in the basement of First United Methodist Church to offer unhoused residents a safe place to stay from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m.—the Wausau Police Department will oversee its temporary operation until a permanent solution is found. WSAW
- ➤ Former circuit court judge Ann Walsh Bradley began her term as chief justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court yesterday after being elected by her colleagues (she began her judicial career in Wausau and was first elected in 1995) while succeeding Justice Annette Kingsland Ziegler. She will serve until June 30 and said she is honored to guide the state’s judicial system (she was re-elected in 2005 and 2015). WSAW

- ➤ All 18 Aspirus Health hospitals earned 2024 Tree Campus recognition from the Arbor Day Foundation for their efforts in using tree programs to boost community well-being.
