COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Monday's scheduled Never Forgotten Honor Flight was canceled due to a crew change and has been rescheduled to depart from Central Wisconsin Airport at 5:45 a.m. today. About 100 veterans are set to leave and return Tuesday night, with the community invited to welcome them.  WSAW
  • About 100 veterans flew from Central Wisconsin Airport Monday morning on the 55th Never Forgotten Honor Flight to visit memorials in Washington D.C. The trip, dedicated to Army veteran Ronald H. Nicklaus (the founder of Incredible Bank), will be celebrated with a welcome home party at the airport Monday night.  WSAW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • WSAW was named News Operation of the Year and Station of the Year by the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association last weekend in Madison. The station earned 17 first-place awards & multiple honors for its television and radio work.  WSAW
  • Surroundings Events and Floral in Verona will raise flower prices by 50 cents to $1 after Mother's Day weekend because higher gas prices are causing delivery delays and limiting service areas, and some families are choosing to send cards or make phone calls instead of driving long distances.  WSAW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Diesel prices in Wausau reached $5.66 per gallon Monday, setting a new record that beat the previous $5.52 mark from June 2022 according to AAA Wisconsin, and the higher cost is due to production challenges + steady demand from trucks and farm equipment.  WSAW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at Riverside Elementary are returning to school today after two weeks at the Greenheck Turner Community Center following a tornado that impacted their neighborhood. Principal Kevin Kampmann said special celebrations with Everest Strong shirts and slight building changes highlight the community's resilience (minor adjustments noted).  WAOW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Wisconsin DNR warns residents today to avoid outdoor burning due to high wildfire risk, with burn permits suspended in 43 counties. Officials advise proper debris disposal to reduce the chance of wildfires.  WAOW

  • A federal court issued a restraining order on the Lac du Flambeau reservation — keeping fishing open to non-tribal state-licensed anglers under Wisconsin rules until a full hearing on May 29.  WAOW
