COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Volunteers built 16 beds for kids in need on Tuesday at North Central Technical College’s parking lot. About 50 community members from Sleep in Heavenly Peace joined together at eight stations + finishing early to support families without beds. WSAW
- ➤ Impact100 Greater Wausau announced four finalists in its sixth annual grant cycle; the winner will receive a $100,000 grant at the awards celebration on Monday, May 18 while the other three each get Merit Grants of $28,333. WSAW
- ➤ Culver’s in Rothschild, Wausau, and Rib Mountain will donate 25% of Tuesday’s sales to support families recovering from a tornado in Ringle—an easy way for locals to lend a hand. WAOW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On May 4, Riverside Elementary in Ringle welcomed 460 students as Principal Kampmann led an assembly to celebrate the building's reopening (it was damaged by an EF3 tornado on April 17). Local custodial and emergency workers were honored at the event. Wausau Daily Herald
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Plover officials say the village has improved flood defenses after the floods of (2019) by converting over 100 acres to prairie and installing culverts near the clinic to guide water away. They are also redesigning a key road with the county to better manage runoff from ongoing heavy rains. WSAW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Marathon County Sheriff’s Office will host a memorial ceremony on Friday, May 15 at 10 a.m. at Bluegill Bay Park in Rib Mountain to honor officers who died in the line of duty (limited seating available) while inviting community members to stand with local law enforcement families. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Allergy season is in full swing today as rising temperatures and tree pollination increase pollen levels, causing many in Wausau to experience itchy eyes and congestion; local experts recommend keeping windows closed (and checking daily pollen forecasts) to help manage symptoms. WSAW
- ➤ Health experts warned that warming winters are boosting tick activity and Lyme disease risks as doctor visits for tick bites rose 25% nationally. A phase three clinical trial for a Lyme vaccine has completed (showing promise) and residents are urged to take extra precautions this season. WSAW
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ D.C. Everest won its Community Service Night game for Donate Life while honoring Brett Schulz (whose organ donation saved six lives), and West soccer beat East 6-0 as teams prepare to play again Thursday. WSAW
- ➤ MaKynna Lesinski (a Rosholt phy ed teacher) won the Packers Fan Favorite Contest after her Titletown photo, taken in November 2024, received the most votes; her photo will be displayed at Lambeau Field and she will get game tickets with a guest. WSAW
