COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Impact100 Greater Wausau announced three local nonprofit finalists—Adaptive Communities, Inc., Bridging Brighter Smiles, Inc., and CASA of Marathon County, Inc.—with one set to receive a $100,000 grant and the others to get $25,500 each at the Annual Awards Celebration on May 19. Members will vote to decide the top recipient. WSAW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ State Superintendent Dr. Jill Underly launched Teacher Appreciation Week to thank teachers for their work in classrooms and to encourage all communities to recognize their positive impact — an effort that includes an official video message from her. WAOW
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Weston received a $48,000 grant from the Wisconsin DNR that covers half the cost of a $96,000 project to improve access to the Eau Claire River at Yellowbanks Park. The project is funded by additional grants + $2,500 from the Wausau Noon Kiwanis Club, $5,000 from the Wausau/Marathon County Parks Foundation and $15,000 from the Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin while the village supplies labor, equipment and materials. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Wausau Department of Public Works announced that phases 2 and 3 of downtown street closures will begin Monday, May 12 with Washington Street between 3rd Street and 5th Street closing and no vehicle traffic allowed on 3rd Street from Washington to Jefferson. The department said part of the closed section will reopen by June 3—pedestrian detours remain in effect and the municipal parking ramp at 101 Washington is kept open. WSAW
- ➤ Marathon County first responders are training at 212 River Dr near Wausau Whitewater in a three-day active shooter drill running until May 8 from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m+ deputies, SAFER firefighters, EMS and 911 operators are practicing coordinated tactics to save lives during emergencies. WSAW
- ➤ Several municipal-run public pools across central Wisconsin are set to open in the coming weeks. The splash pad at City Park will open on May 23 while pools in Marshfield, Medford, Stevens Point, Wausau, Weston, and Wisconsin Rapids are scheduled to open between June 4 and June 23. WSAW
- ➤ CWPCo said repairs on Whiting Dam will be completed by late June—after which it will take seven days to restore the water level while the company replaces a failing stoplog and carries out additional maintenance, ensuring a steady river flow and ongoing updates to local agencies. WSAW

- ➤ The Colby-Abbotsford Police Department posted on Facebook urging local families to seek help after a local teen died from self-inflicted injuries earlier this week, providing hotline numbers and mental health resources during Children’s Mental Health Week — a message intended to encourage parents to talk with their children about their feelings.
