COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Brad Steckart’s Sit By Me app, which connects locals for face-to-face interaction at community spots, will appear on Project Pitch It this weekend. The Wausau native developed the app to boost local engagement and help businesses fill seats with his pitch airing Saturday at 10 p.m. and Sunday at 10:30 a.m. WSAW
- ➤ FETCH Foster and Rescue welcomed 25 beagles Monday evening (many having never worn collars) and cared for them as they received medical checks and behavior tests. The volunteer-run group will soon move the dogs into foster homes once they are neutered and their recovery is complete. WSAW
- ➤ Rib Mountain unveiled a three-quarter-mile gravel bike course at Doepke Park in celebration of National Bike Month — a community project with donated traffic signs and playful touches for kids. The course is part of summer cycling plans. WSAW
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Tom Smrz (with 52 years of experience) from Plover repairs vintage televisions and radios by learning from local shops and sharing ideas with fellow collectors. He plans to pass his treasured fixes on to his kids while keeping old technology alive. WAOW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Mosinee High School junior, Madison Orlovsky donated six life jackets and is teaching families about water safety ahead of Water Safety Awareness Month. The student will take her message to Washington (D.C.) at the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America conference. WAOW
- ➤ Students in Weston are voting for D.C. Everest music teacher Joe Finnegan as America's Favorite Teacher ahead of his retirement. Finnegan has dedicated 37 years to music instruction and leaves behind a legacy that inspires current students. WAOW
- ➤ Students at D.C. Everest Senior High built their 21st Habitat home in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Wausau and will host a free open house from 3 to 6 p.m. May 13 (behind the Tech Wing) to showcase their work and answer questions. Wausau Daily Herald
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Black bears have emerged from hibernation and wildlife experts advise Wausau residents to clean grills, remove bird feeders, and secure garbage to cut down food smells that attract bears; if a bear appears, residents should make noise to alert it and keep a safe distance. WSAW
- ➤ On May 5, a failed valve caused manure to spill from Deercreek Holsteins LLC into a tributary of Black Creek near Athens — DNR staff and Marathon County officials are containing and cleaning up the discharge. WAOW
