COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The North Central Wisconsin Master Gardeners Association will host its annual Plant Sale on May 17 from 7:00 am to noon at the Marathon Park Cattle Barn, 1201 Stewart Ave in Wausau; funds will support local public gardens, student scholarships, and other community programs. Garden lovers can enjoy a free children's planting area (credit card transactions will not be accepted).  Wausau Times
  • Three Marathon County non-profits—Adaptive Communities, Bridging Brighter Smiles and Casa of Marathon County—are finalists for Impact100’s $100,000 grant, the largest award since its founding in 2020. Donors will vote on May 19 to choose one winner who will receive $100,000 while the other two will each get $25,000.  WSAW

CRIME NEWS

  • The DOJ announced that Operation Restore Justice rescued 115 children and arrested 205 child sexual abuse offenders—including Troy Schaden, whose March 5 home search led to the seizure of devices with illegal material, and Victor Vega Rojo, who lacks legal status and is now held by ICE.  WSAW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • During NFL Draft week, the Visit Wausau Convention and Visitor’s Bureau reported that local hotels saw occupancy jump from about 50% to 78–80%, boosting revenue by $250,000 to $500,000. About 70 visitors used stay and shuttle packages to Titletown—many riding more than one day and receiving kits with details on local businesses.  WAOW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, the community gathers for a final farewell celebration at Grant Elementary, located at 500 North 4th Avenue in Wausau, where food trucks, historical artifacts, and a 2050 time capsule mark the event from 4:30 to 6 p.m. — Future events include a Final Buzz Bash at Hewitt-Texas Elementary on May 30 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and a Last Hoorah at Hawthorn Hills Elementary on June 3 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.  WSAW
  • Marathon County Public Library’s Wausau Headquarters will host a free genealogy meetup featuring a virtual visit from professional genealogist Eleanor Brinsko on May 12 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.—participants will learn the basics of genealogical research and ask questions as they explore available resources.  Wausau Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The vendor chosen to run the concession stand at Riverlife Park has backed out due to family health concerns—prompting the parks department to review alternative service options. Jamie Polley explained the situation at Monday night's committee meeting and said her staff will present new plans before June.  WSAW
  • WisDOT will hold a public input meeting on May 14 at 5 p.m. at Horace Mann Middle School cafeteria at 3101 North 13th Street to discuss options for improvements on East Wausau Ave from North 6th to North 18th streets—an initial presentation is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. before the open house format resumes.  WSAW

  • Mosinee teacher Don Winter opened Winter Ridge Disc Golf Course at River Park after raising $4,000 to design a beginner-friendly nine-hole course near the local school—intended to give families and experienced players alike a chance to try a new sport. The course may expand with additional holes if community interest grows.  WSAW
