COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Fetch Foster and Rescue welcomed 25 beagles freed from Ridglan Farms who are receiving round-the-clock care while awaiting treatment, neutering, and approved homes. A few beagles still need sponsors ($1,000 each) to help fund their medical care and rehabilitation. WAOW
- ➤ The Friends of Marathon County Public Library will hold a book sale on May 16 at its Wausau headquarters (300 N. First St.) from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Items include books, DVDs and games priced from 50 cents up, and membership is $10 per individual or $15 per family. Wausau Daily Herald
- ➤ Kronenwetter will host the free Bike & Walk for the Health of It event on May 14 at Towering Pines Park at 5:30 p.m.—participants can choose from 1-, 3-, or 9-mile courses and earn medals and raffle entries. Wausau Daily Herald
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Mid-State Technical College hosted the New Ideas Pitch Challenge on April 21 at its Stevens Point LEAD Center (a campus hub for innovation), where 10 students from local technical colleges pitched business ideas for cash prizes and honored Valerie Rivera with first place, Jessica Hermanson with second, and Les Cornette with third. - ➤ Following a nationwide breach of the Canvas learning system, Wausau School District sent a letter Wednesday warning parents that student records were exposed but passwords and financial details remained secure; schools using Canvas plan to monitor updates from the provider (Instructure). WSAW
- ➤ During Teacher Appreciation Week, the Institute for Reforming Government recognized Newman Catholic, Thomas Jefferson Elementary, and the Wausau School District for high student performance. The awards honor these schools for retraining teachers and acquiring quality textbooks that boost student growth. WAOW
- ➤ A Wausau marine science program introduced over 10,000 Wisconsin children to Clara the Whale (a 56-foot inflatable exhibit) in the first four months of the year and has visited nearly 40 schools while planning more hands-on learning events at libraries and community centers through 2028. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Marathon County held Emergency Management office hours Thursday at the Ringle Municipal Center to help homeowners ask about rebuilding and accessing disaster relief after the April 17 tornado. Around 15 households received guidance and were directed to support services through county and state programs. WSAW
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Wisconsin football will play Notre Dame at Lambeau Field when the season opener kicks off at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6 + NBC will air the game. WSAW
- ➤ Andy Meyer returns as head coach for Wausau East girls basketball following a 1-9 finish in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. The coach (33 years of experience) said he plans to boost teamwork and shape a winning culture on the court. WSAW
- ➤ Merrill girls soccer team beat Mosinee 1-0 on Thursday in Mosinee (sweeping the season series) and will play Portage/Poynette on Saturday. WSAW
