- ➤ The Hagar House is accepting donations for its Mother’s Day tribute to honor mothers — contributions of $1,000 or more mark plaques or images on a Legacy Wall that funds two new building projects, including nearly complete Ruth’s House and a planned community space on North 5th Street. WSAW
- ➤ The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest is seeking volunteer campground hosts for its 2026 summer season. Volunteers will greet campers, share recreation info and help maintain campgrounds at various forest sites, and interested applicants can call (715-362-1300) for details. WSAW
- ➤ The Marathon County Public Library is hosting a free game night for teens and adults on May 20 from 5-7 p.m. at 300 N. First St., with board games available and the option for visitors to bring their own. Wausau Daily Herald
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Mid-State Technical College arborist students helped Wisconsin Lions Camp in Rosholt ready its facilities for the summer session starting June 1. The work boosted safety and provided valuable job training (a partnership benefiting both groups). WAOW
- ➤ Canvas is back online after a cyberattack disrupted Northcentral Technical College systems, leaving students without access for 12 hours on Thursday. The college advises students to watch for suspicious emails (as names and email addresses may have been exposed). WSAW
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ DNR Secretary Karen Hyun said Wisconsin set aside $133 million to address PFAS concerns and will launch a summer sampling program to test 800,000 private wells + facilities, with further updates planned. WAOW
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Hospital officials held a groundbreaking ceremony for Aspirus Wausau Hospital’s $227 million expansion, which will add 72 beds, update surgical services and install a new PET/CT scanner. The project is set to finish in 2028 (boosting local contractor jobs) and will help serve more community patients. WSAW
- ➤ Health experts say that a hantavirus strain making international headlines poses little risk for locals since Wisconsin cases are rare and mainly come from rodent droppings - residents are advised to take precautions when cleaning these areas. WAOW
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Wittenberg-Birnamwood coach Nick Mechelke won the 7 Girls Basketball Coach of the Year Award on Friday after his team posted a 26-1 season and unbeaten conference play. This marks his second win—he first earned the honor in 2020. WSAW
- ➤ Six Valley Conference teams competed in Stevens Point on Friday as D.C. Everest's Karter Quevillon led with a 72 while Wausau East’s Sawyer Krambs posted a 73; SPASH scored a team total of 317 and Rapids remains the overall leader in the tournament. WSAW
