- ➤ Families are invited to celebrate Armed Forces Day on May 17 at downtown Wausau Airport — EAA Chapter 640 will host free activities that honor local veterans and introduce kids to aerospace through historic aircraft displays, a Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, a youth run, and hands-on exhibits from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Learn Build Fly Education Center. - ➤ A bilingual funeral service will be held Friday, May 23 at First United Methodist Church of Wausau for Lolipa 'Israel' Tambwe—who drowned May 11 in the Wisconsin River near the kayak launch and arrived as a refugee in April 2024—who was a student at Wausau East and a member of the soccer team. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Cory Kromray, 39 (facing eight counts of wire fraud and two counts of unlawful monetary transactions), was indicted in Minocqua for allegedly using investor funds meant for trade investments and may face up to 30 years in prison if convicted. WSAW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Daily Herald released a list of the last day of school and graduation dates for local school districts, showing that Wausau School District students will finish classes on June 5 for younger grades and June 6 for older students, with Class 2025 set to graduate on May 31. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On May 14, flags flew at half-staff to honor Hmong-Lao veterans for their service during the Vietnam War—Gov. Tony Evers had designated the day in 2021 to remember those who faced danger after the U.S. withdrew from the conflict. WSAW
- ➤ State lawmakers are working on the state’s two-year budget that will set funding for schools, transportation, mental health, and other public services as Gov. Tony Evers and the Joint Finance Committee review funding requests and proposals. - ➤ Last Wednesday, the Wisconsin DOT held an open house at Horace Mann Middle School to gather resident input on the planned reconstruction of Wausau Avenue, which will feature new pavement, improved pedestrian access, and a redesigned North 6th Street intersection including a shared left turn lane. Project Manager Preston Bohn said plans will be finalized by May 2028 and work is scheduled to begin in 2029—addressing safety concerns noted in a recent review. WAOW
