- ➤ Community members gathered at Pine Grove Cemetery today to honor an unknown World War I veteran who died by suicide in 1930 as Memorial Day approaches. The ceremony featured trumpets and an emotional poem by Wausau’s first Poet Laureate — a reminder of veterans’ sacrifices and ongoing mental health struggles. WAOW
- ➤ Habitat for Humanity of Wausau and D.C. Everest Senior High School students moved home #77 to its permanent location on Marguerite Street near St. Therese School in Schofield Wednesday; parts of the house were built on campus in September under a zero-interest financing plan. WSAW

ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ AAA projects nearly 45 million American travelers for Memorial Day, with 834,000 from Wisconsin driving over 50 miles from home today through Monday, May 25. Higher fuel costs are causing many travelers to plan shorter trips and choose closer destinations. WSAW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Marathon County Public Library invites teens aged 12 to 18 to customize a journal page at any of nine branches after June 1 to record their summer experiences. Completed pages should be returned by Aug. 31 for credit in the Summer Reading Program + participation is free. Wausau Daily Herald
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The EPA announced $94 million in funding (for replacing lead pipes) to help Wisconsin identify and remove toxic water lines from homes with the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund, a move aimed at protecting children. The project will fund inventories and planning tasks. WAOW
- ➤ Alexander Field-South Wood County Airport in Wisconsin Rapids received a $2.7M FAA grant to modernize its terminal—updating interiors, accessibility, energy efficiency, and technology systems. Planning is underway and construction will start in 2027 pending final approvals. WAOW
- ➤ Greater Wausau Prosperity Partnership received a $500K grant from Wisconsin Economic Development Corp to fund Marathon County’s workforce relocation initiative that offers incentives, employer partnerships and quality-of-life marketing to attract new professionals in high-demand sectors — more details will be provided later.
