  • Families in Wausau will enjoy a free outdoor movie series on the 400 Block from June through August, with the first kid-friendly film showing on June 19 at 7 p.m. Organized by the Wausau & Marathon County Parks, Recreation + Forestry Department, popcorn will be available for purchase near 3rd and Scott Streets.  WSAW

  • Rib Mountain Drive is adding new businesses as Chipotle finishes construction on Lilac Avenue—expected to open by the end of summer—and a new coffee shop, 7 Brew, is set to open this fall. Chick-fil-A remains in early planning with an anticipated opening by early next year while plans for Raising Cane’s and Woodman’s continue amid local traffic and environmental reviews.  WSAW

CRIME NEWS

  • Experts say that ignition interlock devices help stop drunk driving, but many offenders have not installed them as required & high monthly fees and setup costs discourage compliance. Data show that 217 people in Portage and 300 in Marathon counties were fined since 2020 while the DOT does not track how many drivers meet the requirement.  WSAW

  • A recent report from the Wisconsin Policy Forum shows local schools are debating a statewide ban on cell phones during class — 72% of high school educators say phones are a major distraction. A proposed state bill would require public schools to ban phone use during instruction while some schools already enforce strict rules.  Wausau Times

  • Wausau Mayor Doug Diny vetoed a duplex project on Wyatt Street meant to revitalize city-owned vacant land because of concerns about the low purchase price, soil cleanup costs, and limited advertising— the Common Council will vote to override his decision with a two-thirds vote at 6:30 p.m. May 27.  Wausau Daily Herald

  • Aspirus Health is marking Mental Health Awareness Month by urging locals to listen to their feelings and take short pauses to ease stress as therapist Jessica Schaefer advises.
