Good morning, Wausau. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 11th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday, June 7, the Wausau PD responded to a call about stranded ducklings along a highway overpass and safely rescued seven of them, transferring the birds to the Marathon County Humane Society—where they will later be moved to a wildlife rescue service north of Wausau.  WSAW

CRIME NEWS

  • Marathon County Jail had 11 suicide attempts in the past year and an inmate died by suicide last weekend while the sheriff’s office removes inmates immediately from group areas and works with mental health professionals — including North Central Health Care and a crisis team — to help them.  WSAW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gov. Evers said Wisconsin’s tourism industry generated a record-high $25.8 billion in 2024—averaging about $70 million per day—and supported 182,000 jobs while growing by 2.2 percent, marking its third consecutive record-breaking year.  WSAW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials exhumed the remains of an unidentified World War I soldier from Pine Grove Cemetery on June 6 and sent them for DNA testing by state and local agencies. The remains, originally buried in 1930 as an Unknown Soldier, will undergo analysis — which may match his genetic profile with national databases — to help identify living relatives.  WSAW
  • After residents left more than three years ago, the owner of Northern Mobile Home Park in Schofield failed to pay over $145,000 in back taxes and owed an extra $98,000 to keep the property, so the county seized the seven-acre site and began clearing the remaining mobile homes at 281 Grand Avenue—efforts that address health hazards and aim to recoup about $225,000 in cleanup costs. County officials will appraise and eventually sell the land, a move welcomed by local residents and adjacent business owners seeking safer surroundings.  WSAW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Yesterday, Wausau Ignite, a new softball team two years in the making, won its first game 13-2 against La Crosse Steam, sparking excitement for more women's sports and a lively fan experience at Athletic Park.  WSAW
  • Edgar, Pacelli and Pittsville advanced to the D4 state baseball tournament in Appleton next week—each team won its sectional on Tuesday. Edgar beat Rib Lake and Solon Springs/Northwood by large scores—while Pacelli and Pittsville won tight games to earn their spots.  WSAW
