- ➤ A segment of the Great Pinery Heritage Waterway in Marathon County was designated a National Recreation Trail by the U.S. Department of the Interior on June 17th—this makes the county one of the few places with two national trails and offers paddlers scenic views of old-growth pine forests and historic dam sites. Local officials say the trail supports outdoor recreation and helps preserve our heritage. WAOW
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 31-year-old Wausau man, Alex Welke, will be charged Friday for fraud for getting $20,913 in unemployment funds while he was in jail — he did not report his incarceration as required by state law. WSAW
- ➤ Stanley Pophal, 63, of Wausau was arrested on Saturday and now faces charges of wire fraud and money laundering after he reportedly tricked more than 120 investors from 2019 to 2025 and spent $15M on personal luxuries — over 300 snowmobiles. WAOW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ State lawmakers introduced a bill to bring virtual reality math lessons into middle and high schools to boost test scores and support teacher-student interaction. Rep. Pat Snyder said the pilot program will use nearly 3,200 VR devices across urban, suburban, and rural districts to benefit 16,000 students — details like a hearing and budget approval are pending — and if approved the program will begin this fall. - ➤ Mid-State Technical College is accepting applications for its new Substance Use Disorder Counselor associate degree— a 67-credit program that trains students for entry-level roles in clinics, hospitals and community centers. Rick Anderson, dean of the School of Public Safety, said the course will help address addiction issues. WAOW

- ➤ This week, SentryWorld Golf Course in Stevens Point is hosting the AJGA Rolex Girls Junior Championship, where 72 top junior golfers (ages 12 to 19) play 18 holes daily from Tuesday to Thursday; local standout 16-year-old McKenna Nelson, who made history with her win at Augusta National in 2024, competes against international players. The tournament is free to attend and offers on-site parking with tee times starting between 8 and 9:50 a.m. WSAW
