COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Wausau hosted a busy Night Market and Movie in the Park Summer Series kickoff Thursday evening, drawing about 1,500 people with over 60 vendors (including six food trucks and two live music acts) as locals enjoyed live music, shopping, and food. Organizers plan more events this summer, with the next movie screening on July 10 and the following Night Market on July 17.  WSAW

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 20-year-old man from Rhinelander was taken to the hospital after his 1986 Chevy Corvette crashed and rolled on County Highway K at 8:37 p.m. on Wednesday in Nokomis—witnesses said he was ejected from the car and the investigation is ongoing.  WSAW

CRIME NEWS

  • The Wausau Police Department warned residents to check cash after two cases of fake movie prop bills were reported at a bank deposit and a convenience store—officials said using them knowingly is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison—and is investigating the source.  WSAW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A free virtual meeting will be held Thursday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.—people interested in starting an in-home daycare must register online, and similar sessions will be offered monthly through the end of the year. Leaders from Childcaring will guide the session to address the childcare crisis in central Wisconsin.  WSAW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Department of Transportation warns drivers that rising temperatures in the coming days will increase the risk of pavement buckling — creating uneven roads — so motorists should slow down, buckle up, and check 511 for updates. They advise reporting any severe pavement damage to 911 with specific location details.  WAOW
  • The Wisconsin Department of Transportation met with the state's Non-Driver Advisory Committee last week and discussed ideas to improve transit options for non-drivers. Marathon County United Way highlighted challenges for rural areas +where nearly one-third of eligible Wisconsinites do not drive+ and called for changes to better serve residents.  WSAW
  • Wausau Mayor Doug Diny said he envisions ending his role by shifting to a manager—council government where staff will report to a City Manager. He plans to form a task force to study the change, present his findings to the City Council, and include a City Manager’s salary in the 2026 budget if the plan moves forward.  WAOW
