COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At Oak Island Park, a new communication board was installed to help children with autism and others show their feelings and play ideas—after the sign was remade to fix a typo before installation. The project was funded with support from Channing’s Joy Foundation and may be added to more parks if it proves successful.  WSAW
  • The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids suffered storm damage Monday during its Swings Against Cancer event, and its maintenance crew has worked since 5:30 a.m. today to start repairs. They plan to open the first nine holes today—full restoration will take longer.  WAOW
  • Ross Bodenheimer is set to open Tower Cafe at Dudley Tower on Monday, July 14—showcasing local artists' work on its walls. The new café will serve coffee, smoothies and breakfast items—while giving artists a chance to earn nearly full commission and work with local schools on future art displays.  WSAW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Owner Dean Day said that Day’s Bowl-A-Dome will have a soft reopening Tuesday, July 1—marking the start of its 78th year—after a February fire caused a lengthy toxic smoke cleanup and delay, with a larger celebration planned for later in July.  WAOW

CRIME NEWS

  • A 30-year-old man died after being hit by a car while running from police on State 29 near 72nd Avenue on June 23 at 11:26 p.m., and two vehicle occupants suffered minor injuries+ first responders administered aid and closed the road for about five hours.  Wausau Daily Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Tony Evers visited Wausau today and met with community members to discuss concerns over the Childcare Counts program, which will end on June 30 and has helped more than 5,500 childcare providers. He said that without continued funding some providers may struggle to pay employees — which could lead to fewer staff and a weakened local workforce.  WSAW
  • Wausau PD and Bridge Street Mission are planning a permanent, year-round homeless shelter after the Finance Committee met Tuesday night and approved moving forward with a formal proposal—city staff and the attorney are drafting contract language as discussions continue. Chief Barnes and Craig Vincent will present a draft contract to the Finance Committee on July 8—furthering the city's effort to address the needs of its unhoused residents.  WSAW

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported that three adults have been hospitalized with Powassan virus—one of whom died—and they urge health care providers to test patients with tick exposure and unexplained neurologic symptoms. The virus is spread by the blacklegged tick—also known for transmitting Lyme disease.  WSAW
