Good morning, Wausau. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 8th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the Pinery Coffee Co. in downtown Wausau hosts an acoustic jam session at 7 p.m. for anyone who loves music. Owner Nolan Baker, working with local community members including banjo player Craig Harrington and his partner Kayla, said participants must bring their own instruments or join in by singing — a move to include musicians of all skill levels.  WSAW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Weston's Pho Zone opened at Riverlife Park's concession stand on July 2, offering boba tea, ice cream rolls and quick items (11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday). The Lee family's lease runs until the end of August and may be extended if customer interest remains strong.  WSAW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Starting next January, Central Wisconsin Airport will launch a Regional Air Service Development Fund to encourage airlines to add flights — the new tool is designed to protect airlines from revenue shortfalls for 200,000 annual passengers. Marathon County has set aside $150,000 and will meet with Portage County in August to secure additional funding—officials say the program may reduce ticket costs by increasing competition.  WSAW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Advanced Placement exam scores became available online July 7 for Wisconsin high school students who checked their My AP accounts on the College Board website—email alerts were sent to notify them and scores of 3 or higher let students earn college credit.  Wausau Daily Herald
  • Nearly two years after Act 20 became law on July 19, 2023, legislators fully funded the program by adding nearly $41 million in the 2025-27 budget—completing the total $50 million needed to change how children are taught to read.  Wausau Daily Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After flash flooding devastated parts of Central Texas over the Fourth of July weekend, residents wondered if similar fast-rising floodwaters could hit central Wisconsin—an event that requires a rare mix of heavy snowfall, ice jams, and rapid snow melt seen in Antigo in 2004. Today, improved alert systems and controlled waterways leave communities better prepared to respond quickly should extreme floods occur.  WSAW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov Tony Evers visited The Neighbors’ Place in Wausau on Monday to see its food shelf 'The Market' after $10 million was set aside in the budget for food security; the food pantry will expand its hours every Thursday starting July 17—letting it serve up to 300 more households each week.  WSAW
  • Wisconsin’s state budget for 2025-2027 will offer film incentives to create a state film office and tax credits for film and TV production + allocate up to $5 million annually. The new measures aim to keep filmmakers in the state and boost production in Stevens Point and central Wisconsin.  WAOW
