COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Taste ‘N Glow Balloon Festival will be held on July 11 and 12 at the Trailmates Snowmobile Club land in Stettin—featuring hot air balloon displays, kids’ activities, food and craft vendors, live music, tethered rides and a night glow, with tickets priced at $5 per day and free entry for children under 12.  WSAW

CRIME NEWS

  • A former hair stylist, Jennifer Brooks, is charged with 38 theft counts after allegedly defrauding clients out of over $36,000 and will return to court Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. She remains in jail on a $7,500 cash bond and will ask a judge to reduce her bond during the hearing.  WSAW
  • On July 6, authorities reported a double homicide and officer-involved shooting at a New Hope residence where Paula L. Shulfer, 52, and Dale S. Shulfer, 53, died from gunshot wounds while their son John L. Shulfer, 35, who did not comply with commands, was shot by a deputy, taken to a hospital with serious injuries, and now faces First Degree Intentional Homicide charges—two children in the home remain unharmed.  WAOW

CULTURE NEWS

  • A historic downtown building has been mostly restored by the museum after over a decade of work—Tuesday marked its first public look. The art museum will open on the first floor and an event space upstairs is set to launch within the next two months.  WSAW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The WEA Member Benefits Foundation is offering unrestricted, multi-year grants to 18 local school districts—including D.C. Everest and Lakeland Area—to help cover mental health services after federal funds were cut, as Wisconsin joined a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education on July 1. The grants offset tight budgets by supporting therapy and counseling programs for students in need.  WAOW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wisconsin's new state budget keeps the minimum Medicaid payment rates for assisted living and group homes in the Family Care program to support nearly 57,000 people who need daily help. The bipartisan deal approved on July 3 sets funding at $258 million a year to help stabilize these facilities and support higher wages for caregivers.  Wausau Daily Herald
  • Passengers at Wisconsin airports no longer must remove their shoes during TSA security checks, as the new rule went into effect Monday, July 7. Officials say the change follows updated security measures and aims to improve the travel experience — a shift from the policy set after the 2001 shoe bomber incident.  Wausau Daily Herald
