COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Habitat for Humanity of Wausau started its Rock the Block campaign Tuesday, July 15—to help local residents who cannot pay for or work on needed repairs meet insurance requirements—in order to upgrade homes. One hundred ten volunteers will complete over 170 shifts—each lasting from two to eight hours—on eight local homes during the campaign. WSAW
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Archaeologists from the Wisconsin Historical Society and Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association used sonar this spring to search the Fox River in Oshkosh and found a shipwreck believed to be the L.W. Crane, a steamer that burned in 1880. The wreck has a hull about 90 feet long and was discovered near the St. Paul Railroad slip—its identity is still being reviewed. Wausau Daily Herald
- ➤ International artist Martina McAteer from Ireland has her oil painting 'Spirit Warrior' on display at the Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art—part of the 2025 Biennial Portrait Competition and inspired by Rib Mountain. Visitors can see the work from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday until September 27. WSAW
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Tribe officials and the American Indian Movement warned that drilling at the Bend Copper-Gold Deposit in Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest may harm the Chippewa and Yellow rivers—concerns center on petroleum-based lubricants used during drilling. Green Light Metals has begun drilling eight exploratory holes on 40 acres and plans to drill 15 more pending approval while saying it adheres to all environmental standards, and the tribe urged water protectors to contact regulators. - ➤ Marathon County Sheriff’s Office conducted SWAT training on Lake Dubay to prepare the team for water-based tactical operations. Officers practiced boat approaches to an island in a simulated hostage scenario — and law enforcement monitored the exercise using drone cameras. WAOW
