COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Golfers will gather at Greenwood Hills in Wausau today to tee off for the annual 'Fore the Road' golf outing that supports training and education in the transportation industry. The event starts at 11 a.m., with a reception at 5 p.m. and live music from Boogie & the Yo-Yos from 7 to 10 p.m.  WSAW
  • Parts of the Wisconsin Rapids paper mill have been torn down for nearly a year, and officials expect the demolition to finish in the first quarter of 2026 — a local group plans to save some materials for art as new businesses begin moving into the area.  WSAW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Two Wausau East alums from Sisu Coffee will host a tasting event tomorrow from 2 to 5 p.m. at Timekeeper Distillery to introduce their new coffee liqueur. Residents will sample the liqueur made with espresso beans from five African countries & blended with locally distilled spirits & learn about its unique flavor.  WSAW

CRIME NEWS

  • On July 13, a local witness said he saw a driver in a black sedan (possibly a Nissan Altima or Toyota Corolla) fire a handgun from the moving vehicle around 11:30 a.m. near the village of Maine, prompting deputies to search for the suspect.  WSAW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Weston Village Board considered a fire fee at their meeting Monday to help cover rising fire protection costs. SAFER Chief Josh Finke said the fee will be charged on a per-square-foot basis — applying to all buildings including tax-exempt ones — and may support hiring more firefighters as the department awaits a federal grant decision by September.  WSAW
  • Gov. Tony Evers said Thursday—he will focus on his family—that he will not run for a third term in 2026, creating the first open governor race in 16 years in Wisconsin.  WSAW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today a free dental clinic opens at DC Everest Middle School’s gym in Schofield for the Mission of Mercy event where 700 volunteers including dentists and hygienists will provide extractions, fillings, cleanings + limited partial dentures to about 450 patients in need. Hosted by the Wisconsin Dental Association and its Foundation, the clinic requires no ID and offers Spanish and Hmong interpretation.  WSAW
  • Carl Schulze of Neenah began his nearly 100-mile journey on July 13 in his powered wheelchair to ask lawmakers for a $20-an-hour minimum wage for home health aides who help him live independently—he travels at about six miles per hour, recharging every dozen miles. He stalled in Oshkosh on July 15 when his aide was unavailable—he plans to resume his trip through Columbus and Sun Prairie to reach the capitol by the end of July and speak for change.  Wausau Daily Herald
