- ➤ Wausau’s Breakfast Optimist Club is preparing to sell up to 3,000 lbs of cheese curds made with a secret ingredient—stale beer—in the batter today at Wisconsin Valley Fair, and the club will donate its profits to local children’s organizations. WSAW
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Former Taycheedah inmate Taylor L. Sanchez was sentenced Monday, July 28, to life without parole for repeatedly punching her cellmate, Cindy Schulz-Juedes, to death on July 19 at Taycheedah Correctional Institution—she confessed to hearing voices that urged her to kill and was ordered to pay $4,196 in restitution—while surveillance footage and witness accounts confirmed the deadly attack. - ➤ Michael Thorson, 37, was taken into custody Sunday in Shawano County for burglaries and vehicle thefts in Shawano and Marathon counties — investigators said he was armed and dangerous when the search began around July 13. WSAW
- ➤ John Shulfer (35) has been charged with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide after police responded to a welfare check on July 6 at a home near Amherst Junction where his parents were found shot dead; he admitted to the killings during questioning after officers shot him to prevent further harm (he also faces charges for dangerous weapon use, domestic abuse, and related offenses). - ➤ After a White House review paused millions for K-12 schools and adult education, Wisconsin will soon get $72.6 million for schools and $7.5 million for adult programs as funds resume in the final week of July — a move state officials say will help avoid cuts and layoffs. Wausau Daily Herald
