COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Culver's on Bridge Street hosted Cops at Culver’s when officers delivered food to customers and promoted the statewide Lights of Christmas campaign—an event that raised money for gift cards for people in need—supporting local law enforcement.  WSAW
  • Wausau resident Krysten Klapatauskas lost her longtime German Shepherd Solti after his health sharply declined and had his remains mailed from an emergency clinic in Appleton. Mail carrier Malachi Knox comforted her during the delivery, and his compassion was captured on video+ sparking viral support and messages from around the world.  Wausau Daily Herald
  • Wausau’s United Way of Marathon County is collecting new or gently used back-to-school clothing at Concert on the Square on the 400 Block from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today—supporting the Community Closet that provides free clothing to about 500 people each month—with donation bins set up for the event.  WSAW

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An 11-year-old girl from Merrill, identified as Maisy Livingston, died on Lake Alexander Sunday after losing consciousness from carbon monoxide toxicity when she fell from a boat—three others on board were treated for similar symptoms.  WSAW

CRIME NEWS

  • On July 6, 2025, the Portage County Sheriff's Office reported that John L. Shulfer allegedly fatally shot his mother and stepfather at their New Hope home while a 7-year-old child watched—deputies later shot him after he raised a weapon—and he now faces charges including first-degree intentional homicide, causing mental harm to a child, and possession of a firearm by a felon at a $2 million bond.  WAOW

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Valley Fair opened its gates at Marathon Park in Wausau — bringing back rides, food vendors and live music with Tuesday’s Sawyer Brown, today’s Parmalee and tomorrow’s Night Ranger; officials said safety plans are in place and a rodeo with a demo derby will follow after the music shows.  WSAW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mission Lake was closed to swimming and boating after routine water testing on July 28 found very high E. coli levels. The parks department is testing further and the lake will remain closed until the water is safe (Marathon County monitors quality at four beaches).  WSAW
  • Mission Lake in Marathon County is closed to swimming and boating because tests show high levels of E. coli bacteria. The Marathon County Parks-Recreation and Forestry Department said testing began mid-May to find the contamination source and the lake will remain closed until the water is safe.  WAOW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Marathon County Sheriff's Office warned boaters to wear life-jackets & avoid alcohol after two drownings were reported, including an 11-year-old in Lincoln County who lost consciousness from carbon monoxide poisoning. Recreation safety deputy Tyler Brehmer explained that fumes from a running engine can quickly overwhelm someone on a boat if proper safety measures are not taken.  WAOW
  • Jamie Weiland resigned from the Weston Board of Trustees on July 21—citing board transparency issues and a good old boys approach that left her voice unheard. She said leaving was best for her family and hopes the board will improve its practices.  WSAW
