COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cyclists finished a three-day ride at the Highground Veterans Memorial Park to raise funds for veteran programs—meeting Vietnam veterans during an early reunion that highlighted decades of support. The event, now in its 41st year, raised about $61K and showed local commitment to serving those who served.  WSAW
  • Today from 5-7 p.m., guests can pick fresh produce such as green beans, cucumbers, and potatoes at the Food + Farm Exploration Center in Plover while learning about local agriculture. The event is free and family friendly + visitors may purchase BBQ picnic dinners at the site.  WSAW
  • Marathon Park will host Hope in the Park, a free community concert on August 24 featuring platinum-selling Christian music artist Anne Wilson with food vendors opening at noon and gates opening at 1 p.m. The event will include opening act Joseph O’Brien at 2:30 p.m. — organizers say attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food to support local families — and it promises a day of music, faith and fellowship.  WSAW

CRIME NEWS

  • The FTC warned Wisconsinites about phishing texts that claim Amazon refunds without returns and urged consumers to ignore and report messages that come from unfamiliar numbers (this scam often includes links and errors).  Wausau Daily Herald
  • The Wisconsin DNR is investigating a swan that was illegally shot in Langlade County over the weekend—officials have not provided further details as the investigation continues.  WSAW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has re-extended its air quality alert statewide until noon today—wildfire smoke from Canada continues to impact the air in many counties with some areas recording unhealthy conditions. The alert marks the 22nd day of poor air quality this year, and residents in sensitive groups are advised to stay indoors.  Wausau Daily Herald

  • Marathon County Parks Department opened a life jacket loaner station at Bluegill Bay boat launch for both kids and adults to access Coast Guard-approved safety gear—officials said the station sees frequent use even in harsh weather.  WSAW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Wisconsin K-12 vaccination rates dropped to 86.4% last school year because many middle and high school students were behind on a new meningitis vaccine rule while rates for other vaccines stayed steady—nine measles cases were confirmed in Oconto County last week, highlighting low measles vaccination among kindergartners.  Wausau Daily Herald
