- ➤ The Landing at Wausau YMCA is expanding with a new 12,000 square foot addition to provide larger program rooms and social areas for members 55 and older — construction began two months ago and will be complete by December 1. WSAW
- ➤ Phase I of Oak Island Skatepark is finished and city officials will host a ribbon cutting ceremony on Sunday, August 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Oak Island Park—Mayor Doug Diny will lead the event as the new park replaces an over 20-year-old facility and offers an update on Phase II improvements. - ➤ Wausau/Marathon County Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department hosted a Movie in the Park event on the 400 Block last Thursday where Toy Story began at 7 p.m. — residents were invited to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and snacks. Organizers said Wicked will play on August 14 and A Minecraft Movie on August 28. WSAW
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Former town clerk Gloriann Doyle pleaded guilty to six counts of embezzlement of nearly $220,000 from Marathon County organizations and reached a plea deal to avoid a jury trial. Bergen chairman Ed Rucinski said she resigned in mid-January after audits found suspicious activity + investigations revealed that the stolen money was used to pay personal bills. WSAW
- ➤ Marathon County Crime Stoppers is seeking help to identify a man suspected of stealing fragrance testers (valued at $1,047) from Ulta Beauty in Rib Mountain on July 23; he is also linked to a similar theft in Oshkosh on July 21, and is described as likely in his 20s and speaking little English. - ➤ Former Merrill Area Public Schools buildings and grounds director Dale L. Bergman, 55, of Athens faces a felony charge for misconduct for charging over $1,500 to school credit cards—he is set to appear in court on Oct. 1 and is accused of using school funds for personal purchases.
