COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Herbert E. McLaughlin, a Shawano native killed at Pearl Harbor nearly 84 years ago, was laid to rest near his mother with local veterans attending the service—his medals and records will be donated to his VFW post to honor his legacy.  WAOW
  • S.C. Swiderski is holding its fifth annual CAS Food Drive until Aug. 23 at 16 SCS drop-off sites across the region—each donation is matched 1:1 to double aid for local food pantries.  Wausau Daily Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • A 40-year-old man accused of starving his teenage daughter accepted a plea deal Monday—he pleaded guilty to child abuse causing great bodily harm to avoid a jury trial while the teen’s stepmother faces separate charges.  WSAW

  • Wisconsin's longest-running blues festival returns this weekend to Fern Island in Wausau and will offer two days of live music, food, and drink sales—its Friday after party at bantr Hotel will provide a shuttle and feature a performance by the Robert Allen, Jr Band.  WSAW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • As the new school year begins, Behavioral Health Clinic in Wausau will help families understand why some students struggle by using a three-step process that starts with an intake, includes scheduled testing, and ends with follow-up discussions of results — offering appointments without a referral. The clinic works with teachers to customize recommendations and supports both urban and rural communities.  WAOW
  • Ken Smith launched a scholarship fund to honor his late colleague, Laura Morris, an elementary school teacher who passed away last November after battling triple-negative breast cancer—raising over $10,971 of a $12,000 goal with support from the district and her family. He will choose a Wausau East student affected by cancer as the first scholarship recipient in the spring.  WSAW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gary Gisselman, a longtime public servant who served on the Wausau City Council and Marathon County Board as well as with local organizations, died on August 10. He was known for his dedication to preserving local history and volunteering in the community.  Wausau Daily Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Hari Menon started at Aspirus in July and he is using small doses of radiation with immunotherapy to treat cancer. He researched this treatment with a team at U.W. Madison and is part of clinical trials that may bring new options to central Wisconsin—he aims to offer personalized care for patients.  WSAW
