COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At Northwoods National Cemetery, families and community members gathered today to honor World War 2 veterans at the Spirit of 45 Commemoration—marking the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender—and to remember those who served. Officials stressed that the event kept the legacy of these heroes alive for future generations.  WAOW
  • Yellow Banks Park is getting a new kayak launch funded by a nearly $50,000 DNR grant and local support—this launch is designed to be accessible and improve access to the Eau Claire River. The project will finish in October unless winter weather forces a spring delay.  WSAW
  • The community and disability resource fair in Wausau offers families and individuals a chance to learn about local support services and educational resources—organizers add that free food, snacks, and a kids room will help visitors connect with needed services. State agencies fund the event to help underserved community members navigate available resources.  WAOW

CRIME NEWS

  • Woodruff police arrested Scott Moxham, 36, who was wanted for a stabbing near Rudolph Road and Woodridge Lane on August 14th at 11:15 p.m. + the victim was flown to a medical facility.  WAOW

CULTURE NEWS

  • In Wausau on Friday, the Big Bull Falls Blues Fest featured nine bands at Fern Island Park with an after-party at the BANTR hotel in Rothschild—shuttle rides were free and the Robert Allen Jr. Band performed exclusively for festival-goers.  WSAW
  • Sam Wolfgram, a local artist who is nonverbal, deaf and has developmental delays, paints pottery to show his thoughts and feelings. He sold his first piece and three full bins of art at the Disability Pride Festival in Plover — his family plans to sell more through Facebook and a future website to help buy his own kiln.  WSAW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marathon County District Attorney Kyle R. Mayo announced the appointment of Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney as special prosecutor in the investigation of a drop box removal in Wausau on September 22—Mayor Doug Diny was photographed moving the box inside against the city clerk’s orders. Toney will review the case conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation and decide if further actions are needed.  WAOW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Photos show Colorado rabbits with unusual tentacle-like and antler growths caused by Shope papilloma virus that does not spread to people — similar cases have been seen in River Falls. Experts note that the rabbits eventually fight off the virus, which may cause the growths to fade over time.  WSAW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Six months after giving birth to her son Levi, Natalie Decker will race in her thirteenth NASCAR Xfinity Series event at Daytona next Friday at 6:30 p.m. on Central Wisconsin CW—she was cleared for exercise six weeks postpartum—she said she is ready to compete again as a new mom.  WSAW
