COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wausau’s Affordable Housing Task Force is planning a community land trust that would buy homes and lower costs for local families—an idea first raised in June last year. They met on Monday to update affordable housing plans and noted that 586 units are still needed while 106 new affordable homes are planned by next fall.  WSAW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Laura Spaeth, a lifelong book lover and graphic designer, opened The Story Cellar on Callon Street last year to bring a used bookstore to Wausau. She hosts monthly book clubs that will soon move down the steps to a cozier spot—supporting local reading.  WSAW

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 122nd Central Wisconsin State Fair kicks off today in Marshfield and will run through Sunday with rides, food, live music, animal exhibits and a draft horse show—offering fun for all.  WSAW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Emerging Leaders offers grants up to $500 for Marathon County schools to support programs for grades seven to twelve, with applications closing on Sept. 26 + winners notified by early November and funds distributed by Dec. 31.  WAOW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Portage County Ad Hoc Committee did not act on the sale of the health care center at its meeting on Monday—protesters gathered outside the County Annex to express their concerns. Community members said they will keep pushing as the committee plans to meet again next week to discuss the $4 million asking price.  WSAW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hometown Pharmacy in Wisconsin Rapids teamed up with Mark Mueller’s family and local police to supply officers with EpiPens after his son died from a peanut allergy. Police from Wood County, Port Edwards, Nekoosa, Wisconsin Rapids, and Grand Rapids attended a thank-you event—each department will soon train in using the devices while funds raise a scholarship for truck drivers.  WSAW

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Wausau East Lumberjacks finished second in the GNC last season and will open the new season on Friday against Westby then host La Crosse Logan next Thursday—head coach Tyler Kramer said the team is ready to show its fast and fun style of play.  WSAW
