  • At the Central Wisconsin State Fair on August 21, the Heeg brothers were honored for decades of dairy farming and fair showmanship, marking 75 years since they first won cattle classes. The brothers celebrated their shared legacy—one still hauling milk each morning—and the traditions they passed on to future generations.  WSAW
  • Lakeland Pantry is asking summer camps and event organizers to donate leftover perishable foods as the summer season ends to help local pantries manage rising food insecurity—Bill Olmsted said extra food is needed due to inflation and supply chain pressures.  WAOW

CRIME NEWS

  • Wausau Fire Division Chief Jared J. Thompson was charged with stealing 486 hydromorphone vials and 612 fentanyl vials from his department's supply between January 2024 and June 2025 — he faces three felony misconduct counts and two misdemeanor theft counts — as announced by the Wisconsin DOJ Division of Criminal Investigation, assisted by local law enforcement.  WAOW

  • Wausau students and educators launched Weaving the Waves to share firsthand accounts of Hmong immigration stories from Laos to Thailand and America (part of the National Geographic Society program 2892 Miles to Go) that connect local youth with their heritage.  WAOW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Evergreen Elementary cut cloth on a new bike park—built by local volunteers and the Central Wisconsin Offroad Cycling Coalition—that gives kids and adults a place to build riding skills. The park features hills, valleys, jumps and berms, and Phase II will begin soon.  WAOW

HEALTH NEWS

  • At Northcentral Technical College in Wausau, experts explained how adverse childhood experiences affect children and families during the Let's Talk About Youth Mental Health series—counselor Jude Stevenson plans to use what she learned to guide community help in Tomahawk. Recordings will be available through the end of September and a follow-up session is set for Aug. 28.  WSAW

  • High school football kicked off on Thursday night in the Valley—Wausau West won 42-21 over Superior and SPASH beat Chippewa Falls 43-15. Other teams played as well and more games are scheduled for next week.  WSAW
