COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Portage County Fair kicks off its 99th year today and will run through Labor Day – offering carnival rides, livestock shows, and competitions where kids display their creativity and skills. President Chris Martin said the event began as a Labor Day picnic to celebrate the harvest and has grown into a cherished local tradition.  WAOW

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 39-year-old Wausau woman was cited for failing to stop at a stop sign when her car collided with a Wausau Police Department squad vehicle at the intersection of Sherman Street and S. 3rd Avenue around 8 p.m. on Aug. 26, and an officer was transported for minor injuries.  WSAW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Long-time board member Jane Rusch resigned effective immediately (after 16 years on the board) and the school district is accepting applications (until Sept. 22 at the Longfellow Administration Center) as it begins the search for her replacement.  WSAW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is preparing for several hunting seasons starting September 1 by urging hunters to check dates, get the right licenses, and follow firearm safety guidelines (T.A.B.K.). The agency also offers online resources (season schedules and public access lands guides) to help local hunters plan safe outings.  WAOW
  • Before Labor Day weekend, the DNR urged boaters to practice safe boating by wearing life jackets since 10 of 12 deadly incidents this year involved no life jacket—boaters are also warned to avoid alcohol to keep their vision and reaction times sharp on the water. Local sporting goods owner Robb Shepherd noted that life jacket sales remain high despite a cooling in weather.  WSAW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors at Marshfield Children’s Hospital offered back-to-school tips to parents in Wausau and Stevens Point so kids can get required vaccines—especially the flu shot—and begin a healthy sleep routine. They advised consulting pediatricians about vaccine schedules and reducing screen time before bed to help children adjust.  WSAW
