Good morning, Wausau. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 19th of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Libraries in the Wisconsin Valley will limit digital services such as the online catalog and ebook checkouts on Sept. 23 because of a system upgrade. Service will resume by the end of the day — users should check with their local library for current hours.  Wausau Daily Herald
  • City of Wausau met with local residents on Thursday to get feedback on plans to extend the River Edge Parkway trail to end at D.C. Everest Park. Neighbors said the new route may better connect trails but are worried about safety as cars share the road—city planners will review the feedback and may hold another meeting.  WSAW
  • Stanley Correctional Institution workers recycled 500,000 pairs of eyeglasses through the Wisconsin Lions Club—cleaning, repairing, and sorting them before they are sent overseas to help people with limited eye care. The program gives inmates useful work and supports communities in need of better vision.  WSAW
  • RiverWest Fest will take over South 2nd Avenue in Wausau on Saturday with 11 food trucks, live music from Old Pine Road and Jordan Bain, and local shops hosting events including an 80s-themed adoptable dog celebration. Admission is free and organizers say the event will boost community spirit—bringing neighbors together.  WAOW
  • Good food and friendly contests are drawing people to Granite Peak for the Big Taste fundraiser supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters mentorship programs. More than a dozen bakers, caterers, vendors and culinary students are competing in ten categories for prizes—winners will be announced today—while organizers hope to raise $75,000 to help local youth.  WSAW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jill Underly, re-elected in April as state superintendent, said at a Sept 18 address at the Capitol that the federal government is bullying public schools by using funding as a bargaining chip—she said this tactic creates confusion and hurts support in classrooms. She also warned that low state funding forces schools to raise money through tax votes and promised to push for real change.  Wausau Daily Herald
  • Local schools and organizations are working with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to bring free, age-appropriate books to children from birth to five in Marathon County, as they launch a $30,000 fundraising campaign to register 1,000 kids for a January program. Parents will receive the first book, The Little Engine That Could, about 8 to 10 weeks after registration—bilingual and Braille options are available.  WSAW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Merrill High dedicated its practice field to honor longtime coach Guy Pawlicki who taught for 30 years and coached for 31. The Bluejays will take the field tonight in a rainy game against Antigo—marking his birthday and a cherished rivalry.  WSAW
