COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, a group of Wisconsin veterans will board the 53rd Never Forgotten Honor Flight to Washington DC to view memorials that honor their service. A welcome home celebration will be held at Central Wisconsin Airport at 10:00 this evening—officials ask people to arrive an hour early for free parking.  WAOW
  • The Greater Wausau Chamber of Commerce and T Wall Enterprises will host a free networking event at Foundry on 3rd from 4–6 p.m. Oct 23 in downtown Wausau—guests must register and be 21 or older for guided tours and mingling.  Wausau Daily Herald

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Culvers will bring back the Curderburger for its 5th year on September 29 through October 14 to headline their first annual Curdtoberfest—new jalapeno cheese curds will launch on October 15 and run through the end of the month.  WAOW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local schools and organizations are teaming up to bring the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to Marathon County by raising $30,000 to deliver free, high-quality books for children from birth to five starting in January (registration will open soon) and aiming to register 1,000 children in its first year (the first book will be The Little Engine That Could).  WSAW
  • The Wausau School District is working to add a new healthcare provider for teachers and staff (Anovia is set for contract talks) to help slow rising insurance costs. The board will discuss final contract details at a meeting on October 13 (this change aims to offer staff quicker access to care).  WSAW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Tammy Baldwin visited the Marshfield Clinic in Weston today to urge a permanent extension of ACA tax-breaks. She warned that without the extension, insurance premiums may rise by 34.5 percent — residents from Marathon City, Athens, and Merrill said they are facing steep health care costs.  WAOW
  • The ACLU is suing Marathon County Sheriff Chad Billeb and other sheriffs for following ICE detainer requests, claiming that their policy of notifying ICE about every non-U.S.-born booking has led to illegal detentions. The lawsuit states that Marathon County received 16 ICE requests this year—nine individuals were transferred to ICE custody, with eight still facing charges at the time of transfer.  WAOW

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Shawano-Menominee Counties Health Department warned residents after a rabid bat was found in Green Valley following an encounter with a family pet — pet owners are advised to vaccinate their animals and avoid contact with wild creatures.  WSAW
