COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Neighbors’ Place is holding its third annual diaper drive in Marathon County to help families with diaper needs—local businesses and the Knights of Columbus have joined the effort. The drive began last Monday and will end Friday—organizers aim to collect around 20,000 diapers much like last year.  WSAW
  • Ninety-eight local veterans, including 97 from the Vietnam era, flew out at 4 a.m. Monday to Washington, D.C. where hundreds greeted them as they visited the Lincoln Memorial—Vietnam Memorial to honor their service.  WAOW
  • Habitat for Humanity of Wausau thanked volunteers, supporters and donors on Tuesday for 35 years of building affordable housing— the group announced plans to expand its volunteer programs to serve more families and will launch a new program to help older residents remain safely in their homes.  WSAW
  • Food for Kidz is urging local residents to volunteer for its event on October 11 at Lakeland Union High School in Minocqua, where 500-600 helpers are needed to package 620 cases of food. The event offers two shifts—9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and invites kids, friends, and family to help out.  WAOW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • D.C. Everest senior Gavin Barth won first place at the SpecMix Bricklayer 500 by laying 63 bricks in 20 minutes at Fond du Lac Stone — the contest on Sept. 17 highlighted skilled trades for construction students.  Wausau Daily Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Wisconsin DNR is urging hunters to test their harvested deer for CWD, especially in the 2025 Fall Priority Areas near recent detection sites. Testing options include self-service kiosks, in-person assistance, and at-home kits, and results will be available in 1–2 weeks—hunters who test positive will receive a replacement harvest authorization—helping to track disease levels statewide.  WSAW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bobbi Birk-LaBarge lost 50 pounds and her clothing size dropped from 18 to 10 when she took weekly Ozempic injections, but her insurance stopped covering the drug after 14 months—pushing her cost from $20 to over $1,000 a month. Desperate for a solution, she turned to an unregulated alternative that made her sick and led to a regain of most of her lost weight.  WSAW
  • Over 85,000 bags of shrimp sold at Kroger-owned stores, including in Wisconsin, were recalled for possible cesium-137 contamination—customers were advised to discard or return the products while the FDA and regulators completed their investigation.  Wausau Daily Herald
  • Child Passenger Safety Week started on Sept.22 to urge parents to buckle kids in the proper car seat since 64% of children who died in crashes last year were not properly restrained — pediatrician Dr. Yanny said that staying in the correct phase longer could reduce injuries and deaths.  WSAW

  • Merrill's volleyball team swept Antigo 3-0 on Tuesday in a conference match and moved to a 3-1 record while Antigo dropped to 1-3; Wausau East won a tight 3-2 soccer game against Wausau West with a decisive goal from Peter Nkoranyi.  WSAW
