COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Granite Peak today begins its fall color lift rides — available every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm until the last weekend of October — with tickets priced at $17.50 for adults and $10 for kids, and riders can exchange tickets if weather causes a cancellation.  WAOW
  • Bridge Street Mission celebrated the opening of its new 35,000‑square‑foot Outreach Center at 325 N. First Ave.—The center expands services for men and adds support for women while the Sept. 25 ceremony honored five program graduates after raising over $5 million in two years.  Wausau Daily Herald
  • During the 53rd Never Forgotten Honor Flight, veterans described how the trip renewed their sense of duty—Wausau Navy veteran Louis Krueger said the flight gave a new meaning to their service, and others expressed their gratitude for the experience.  WAOW

  • Stanley native Jessi Ebben entered the race for the 7th Congressional District seat after signing the 2011 petition to recall former Governor Scott Walker and will launch her campaign Monday morning at 10:30 at Schuette Metals in Rothschild - she said that recalling Walker made her realize her conservative values.  WSAW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Portage County reported its first human case of West Nile virus this year — residents are advised to use insect repellent and remove standing water to prevent mosquito bites as most infected people show no symptoms.  Wausau Daily Herald
  • Today, the Alzheimer’s Association hosts its largest fundraiser at Marathon Park with registration at 9 a.m., an opening ceremony at 10:10 a.m., and a walk starting at 10:30 a.m. Organizers said teams raised over $74,000—exceeding their goal of $68,500—while the funds will support research, education programs, and free care consultations.  WSAW

  • Former Heisman Trophy-winning running back Ron Dayne remembered his teammate Bill Ferrario, who died at 47 earlier this week—he recalled one of their first meetings at a Badgers practice from 1997 to 1999.  WSAW
