Good morning, Wausau. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 30th of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Wausau law firm partnered with Panera Bread on Stewart Avenue to host a fundraiser supporting Judicare Legal Aid, which offers free legal services to low-income residents and Native Americans. Customers ordering with the code 'Fund4U' online or in store will help the mission, and if $150 is made in sales, the firm will receive 35% of profits—boosting the nonprofit's work.  WSAW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Education cut an $8 million grant for special education teacher programs because of DEI language concerns – Wisconsin’s Department of Public Instruction appealed the decision after removing the contested wording from its application. The funding cut jeopardizes the long-term future of programs that recruit and train these teachers.  Wausau Daily Herald
  • At Pacelli Catholic High School, students lock their phones and smartwatches in Yondr pouches from 7:40 a.m. until the last bell to help them talk more and focus on school work. The ban began at the start of the school year and devices are returned at the front office with magnets — a system funded by a school grant and fundraising efforts.  WSAW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Child advocates from Marathon County are urging legislators to clearly define what qualifies as an egregious case of child abuse and neglect under Act 78—especially cases like child sexual assault that currently go unreported. They will speak at an information hearing today at 10:30 a.m. to push for changes that hold systems accountable.  WSAW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nearly 400 walkers gathered in Wausau for the Walk to End Alzheimer's—raising $78,547 so far and expected to surpass $90,000 as donations remain open until December 31 to support families with care and advocacy efforts.  WAOW
  • Aspirus Health has expanded its E-Visit service—covering cold, flu, COVID-19 symptoms, soreness, and more—to allow patients to get care from home via the MyAspirus app or website.
