- ➤ Wausau West DECA is gearing up to launch its annual Trick or Can Drive this Halloween, where students will distribute donation bags and slips to collect non-perishable food items for The Women’s Community. The event, a 12-year tradition that provided 9,000 items last year, will begin on October 22—allowing residents to leave food on their porches for a Halloween pickup. WAOW
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Hy-Vee announced it will acquire the County Market store at 220 S. 18th Avenue in Wausau, which will close at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11 and reopen Tuesday, Nov. 18 as the Wausau Hy-Vee — with an adjoining Circle K rebranded as Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh — and will offer all 130 full-time and part-time employees positions with Hy-Vee benefits. - ➤ A dual-branded Applebee’s IHOP restaurant will open on October 28 at 2221 W. Stewart Ave. in Wausau—its ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. will include giveaways and a raffle while guests enjoy IHOP pancakes and Applebee’s boneless wings. WSAW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Today, Pittsville Fire Company and the high school staged a realistic mock crash to show students the deadly risks of drunk driving — a demonstration inspired by a fatal April crash that deeply affected a local family. Senior students left with a stronger lesson to avoid the dangerous choices behind the wheel. WSAW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, Wausau Public Works has begun Phase 1 of fall leaf pick-up—using vacuum trucks to clear West side streets and keep them safe. The cleanup will continue next week on the East side and residents are asked to keep debris out of gutters to avoid service disruptions—officials said. WSAW
- ➤ Congress did not pass funding by Tuesday, causing a federal shutdown that is affecting Wisconsin programs. Essential services like health, postal, and court operations will continue while some federal employees may not be paid and small business support is delayed—this may change until funding is restored. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Wausau Police Department is offering officers a choice to wear pink badges for Breast Cancer Awareness Month so they can show support for the cause—officers can purchase these badges as a sign of honor. WAOW
- ➤ Fresh cut and processed cantaloupe sold under the brand names Harvest Cuts and Fresh and Finest is being recalled for possible Listeria contamination in Wisconsin—stores across three states are asking customers to return the clamshell packages for a refund. No illnesses have been reported so far. WSAW
- ➤ Marshfield Medical Center-Weston will mark its 20th anniversary this Saturday as it celebrates two decades serving the Weston community. The hospital now offers over 50 specialties and new departments—such as its Outpatient Surgery Center—to improve patient care. WSAW
- ➤ Marathon County Health Department named Caitlin Suginaka its new health officer and she began her role on Sept. 29, filling the vacancy left by Laura Scudiere’s February resignation. She brings over 15 years of public health experience and will guide efforts to protect residents' health — a key step in strengthening county health services. Wausau Daily Herald

- ➤ The Puent quadruplets are seniors at Newman Catholic where Damien, Everett and Griffin play football and Addison plays tennis — they will also join fall basketball and track events — as they finish their final sports season. Head Coach Paul Michlig said their graduation will leave a significant gap for the school. WSAW
